Is technology stealing our (self) identities?

As time goes, our social world has expanded dramatically, from families, friend, neighborhood and communities to an almost-limitless universe of people because of the proliferation of the internet and social media. It is easy to see how external forces may now be gaining a disproportionate influence our self-identities compact to generation before. These social influences, increase by the recent explosion of technology, may be shaping our self-identities in ways in which most of us aren’t the least bit aware.
In the previous generation, mostly the social factors that influenced self- identity were positive. For example like family, peers, school, communities and even the media (old media) sent the positive or healthy messages to the people about who we were and how we should perceive ourselves. However, there were bad influenced but they were far outweighed by those that beneficial and those forces acted mostly reflecting back on us saw in ourselves, at the end it resulting in affirmation rather than change in our identities.
Today popular culture (technology era) and the latest media are no longer hold a mirror that reflects to our self-identities. Nor does it provide feedback about how grounded our self-identities are in the reality of our live. Instead popular culture produces an “image” who want it us to be. Tapping in to our most basic need to feel good about themselves, accepted and attractive, popular culture tell us what we should believe about ourselves.so the main problem is the self-identities that shapes by popular culture serve its own best interest rather than what is best for us. The self-identity of young generation people who is deeply immersed in popular culture and media are now shape by external forces and self -identity is no longer self-identity, meaning derived from the self but rather is an identity projected on to us by technology and media and in no way accurate reflection of who we really are.
One of the aspects that change our identity is social media. It has caused us to shift away from expressing our self-identity and toward constructing facades based on the answers to these questions. “how will others look at me?”, ”how can I ensure that others view me positively?”. The goal for many now in their use of social media become how they can curry acceptance through their profile picture and posting.
In my opinion there are two things I would like to say about. First, most people have no idea of the dramatic changes in their identity which is occurring slowly as we involve in social media. Second, the shift in our identity, from internally to externally driven can’t be really good for us but actually it’s depend on the technology users about how they put their identity in it.

  1. Hi Wiwi... You made me think about myself after reading your post. How much have I changed? Since years ago, I have been active engaging myself on Social Media. I always hold onto this quote "post to express, not impress." However, nowadays, it is hard not only for me but I am sure to everyone to post something that is solely purely to express something without being concern on people's perception. The total of likes seem to define the quality of your post while we know, IT IS NOT. Social Media does not define who we are and we cannot let the negative perception direct our life to match with other people standard. BUT IRONICALLY, we still want to get hundreds and thousands of 'like'. OH MY GOD! I need to make a change and so does everyone.

  2. The technology development become a new culture worldwide is definitely change us. It is reflect me when the technology still undeveloped, how our behaviour before the arrival of this popular culture. We tend to express our self easily using social media nowadays without even thinking. The goal is to make others impress with your action especially for the younger generation. This popular culture can give a negative impact to the society because this culture encouraging people to judging negatively to the social media user. so I guess people need to be aware with their behaviour in social media and change perception of the social media users because not all the people using social media as a medium to attract or impress other people.

  3. Yes from me. We can definitely see if our social worlds have expanded dramatically in the last decade, from families, friends, neighborhoods, and schools to an almost-limitless universe of people due to the proliferation of the Internet and social media, it is not difficult, to see how external forces may now be gaining a disproportionate influence over our self-identities Compared to previous generations. And reviews these social influences, accelerated by the recent explosion of technology, may be shaping our self-identities in ways in the which most of us are not the least bit aware.

  4. In my opinion, yes there is a dramatic changes that happen in our identity when we involve in social media. Social media have getting expanded and due to the advance of the technology, everyone are now being connected. Compared to the peasant society, we are now had a rapid changes of life because our identity slowly affected by the social media. Don't try to look another example, just look at me. I'm also the one that have change identity a little bit like when I'm in social media, I'm not too shy but when I'm in outside, I am the one that who don't talk so much with people I not very closed.

  7. I quite agree with what you say, because I seems to be also unconsciously lost myself on social networking sometimes,
    really ashamed. :(
Indeed, nowadays, there are a lot of people in the network will be apart personal and work life, a public relations consultant Ashley Brown said: "with the number of social media more and more, people trained in different ways on different network ability to communicate with other people." Means that the social media gives people "play multiple roles" magical ability. There are a lot of people even get caught in the virtual world, because in the era of social media, they can be split into multiple different 'self'.
However, just because of that, social networking often give us a feeling that is hard to trust. Multiple identities on the network, resulting in no one can determine the true identity of others. And on the other hand, people always show the most active and special side of character in Internet, so all network behavior are strategic in nature.
The New York times' reporter Clive Thompson says, people chatter on social media, perhaps reflects the modern people's extreme narcissism.
But I firmly believe that the current narcissism is not a absolutely self appreciation, but from an identity anxiety, anxiety of identity from people. Because they can't give themselves a clear positioning.
Therefore, we can see that, there is an obvious narcissism within the young.

  8. Nowadays, media is a part of the world and human activities. Without realizing, this advance technology has changed our identity. They build their identity through social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and others. Nowadays people are more comfortable to express or share their feeling through social media for public viewing whether to close friends or people around who knew them. Facebook is one of the most popular medium for people to share something about their identity. For example, a person will update status on Facebook such as the expression of feelings of the individual. Without realizing, people will recognize us just by looking our status in social media. Individuals who prefer to use social media for expressing their feelings are one of the ways they build their self-identity.

  9. Today in our era. people in social media really thinks about what others think about themselves. they also loves to follow what people do and do what current trends do. Media do influence everything in our lives. for the examples music, clothing, food, lifestyles and even the way how we talk.

  10. When you said "popular culture actually set the image on they want us to be", it hits me hard. Because I realized, no matter how much I try to stay true to myself, I just can't fully do it. People will still judge me anyway. They would say "Why would you say that?" "Why won't you say that?" or basically they are making us like "You can do whatever you want, but we can hate how matter we want". We keep on saying this to ourselves. "It's okay, you can't satisfy everyone. There's nothing you can do about it." But still, I can't stop from thinking about how much people will like me if I do this way or would it be better if I do it the other way. Even if it's not much, but yes. Technology does steal our self identity.

  12. In the past few decades there has been a revolution in computing and communications, and all indications are that technological progress and use of information technology will continue at a rapid pace. Accompanying and supporting the dramatic increases in the power and use of new information technologies has been the declining cost of communications as a result of both technological improvements and increased competition. According to Moore's law the processing power of microchips is doubling every 18 months. These advances present many significant opportunities but also pose major challenges. Today, innovations in information technology are having wide-ranging effects across numerous domains of society, and policy makers are acting on issues involving economic productivity, intellectual property rights, privacy protection, and affordability of and access to information. Choices made now will have long lasting consequences, and attention must be paid to their social and economic impacts. route plan software
